The Moscow Good Food Club is always on the lookout for new restaurants and when the invitation came from the Marriott Hotel Novy Arbat to sample their new steakhouse, many members where eager to try this new edition to Moscow’s culinary scene. Whilst another steakhouse opening might not excite too many, the fact that this establishment is backed and run by Marriott, spoke for excellence and quality.
Our resolute members made their way through the auspicious entrance of this relatively new hotel and received a notably warm welcome at the entrance of the bright and cheerful New York Steakhouse located in the lobby level. The décor is in traditional New York Steakhouse style with a spacious bar, wood panelling and comfortable furnishings.
I don’t think that we have ever received such a warm and friendly welcome to an establishment in Moscow. Each and every member of staff seemed genuinely happy to see us arrive and their smiles were infectious! What a great start!
Delicious canapés of beef tartar with quail egg, prawns with tomato salsa, camembert with marinated mini apples and grilled zucchini with feta cheese set the standard for the meal. Each was excellent and admirably paired with a lively Prosecco DOC Spumante Oro Casa Defra from Italy.
As is customary we took our seats exactly at 20:00 and were introduced to the Executive Chef Pavel Pavlov who explained the meal that he and his team had prepared for us. We started with an amazingly presented Rustic Salad with a ‘tepee’ of crisp bacon. This contained radicchio, spinach, fries, rocket, avocados, squash, sweet potatoes and cress with succulent dressing based on Austrian pumpkin seed oil. Excellently balanced flavours that were accompanied by the Le Rose di Regaleali IGT Conte Tasca d’Almerita from Sicily that perfectly complemented this delicate salad.
The next dish was a stunner. It was billed as a New Jersey Crab Cake with avocado guacamole. The fish cakes were crisp and delicious full of chunks of crab meet and ginger. An unusual but excellent combination especially when accompanied by a classic Pouille-Fumé en Travertine Henri Bourgeois AOC from the Loire Valley, which was crisp and perfectly chilled.
For the main course we were offered their signature Dry Aged Rib Eye or Roasted Halibut. As attending a steak house, most chose the Beef! This was slices of a classic Dry Aged Rib Eye cooked to perfection(not easy for a group) beautifully presented with tomato and asparagus with bone marrow and vedgetables. Superb flavours of a classic steakhouse dish superbly paired with an exquisite Le Cigare Volant Santa Cruz Ava from the Bonny Doon vineyard from California an amazing blend of Mourvèdre, Grenach, Syrah and Cinsault that produces an wonderful mastery of tannin. A superb wine more than ideally paired with the steak.
After a short break to compare notes and prepare the critiques it was time for dessert! The New York Steakhouse Signature Cheese Cake. These are individually created cheese cakes rolled in crumbs, served with strawberries and a tart strawberry sauce. To die for flavours but slightly lacking something (which was still being discussed many hours later!) Paired with an excellent Grande Cuvee 1531 de Aimery Cremant de Limoux, this was most suitable end to a succulent meal.
Executive Chef Pavel Pavlov then joined us from the kitchen. He was greeted by most appreciative applause and the reading of the critique (a most important part of the Moscow Good Food Club) began.
Our respected spokespeople were able to present comments from their tables. Whilst mostly highly complimentary each table did have some suggestions for Chef Pavlov and he was seen eagerly taking notes! All were unanimous in the praise of the general atmosphere, extremely friendly and efficient service, excellent food and admirably paired wines.
